A framework for virtual channel onto virtual path multiplexing in ATM-ABR

چکیده
This paper proposes an algorithm for aggregating virtual channel connections (VCCs) onto virtual path connections (VPCs) in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. We focus on the interesting problem of multiplexing onto an available bit rate (ABR) VPC. ABR VPCs are particularly useful for connecting enterprise sites over the Internet, providing a virtual private network (VPN). The VPC/VCC hierarchy is also important for supporting Internet differentiated services over ATM. The coupling between the flow control mechanisms for VCCs and VPCs is not standardized. We propose fairness definitions for VPC bandwidth allocation, and describe an algorithm for allocating the VPC capacity to the multiplexed VCCs. Preliminary simulation results indicate that the algorithm achieves the required fair allocations, while controlling queue sizes. متن کاملResource Management with Virtual Paths in ATM Networks
10 n asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks, multiplexing and switching are performed on 53-byte cells which are transported across the network on virtual channel connections (VCCs) [1]. A virtual path connection (VPC) is a labeled path which can be used to transport, process, and manage a bundle of VCCs. Two levels of cell forwarding are defined: virtual path (VP) and virtual channel (VC), ...
متن کاملCommunicating with Virtual Paths and Virtual Channels
Clients of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks communicate by creating connections to one another, then exchanging data over these connections [1] [2] [4] [6] [7] [10]. The ATM standard provides for two types of connections: Virtual Path (VP) and Virtual Channel (VC). With a VP connection, clients set the VP identifier (VPI) field of the ATM header (Figure 1) when sending cells. The netwo...
متن کاملVirtual Tree Path Management for Battlefield Networks
Virtual Trees are source-rooted trees in ATM networks in which VCs originating at the source but going to diierent destinations can share some of the bandwidth pre-allocated to the VT, thus providing an additional multiplexing advantage over Virtual Paths. Non-ATM protocols such as MIL-STD-188-220A can also take advantage of Virtual Trees because source concatenation provides a beneet very simi...
متن کاملConvergence Study of PWM Control of ABR Traffic in ATM
In recent years a considerable amount of research [1-14] has been undertaken in the area of congestion control and avoidance of available bit rate(ABR) service. Both the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the ATM Forum have accepted the rate based feedback scheme as the framework for ABR traffic control [1, 6, 8 & 15]. In the ABR traffic management scenario, each source attempts to...
